Building Your Family's Future

Dr. Mark Hughes, founder of Genesis Genetics Institute, is a molecular geneticist. He, along with Drs. Handyside and Winston (the IVF team) in London, UK, performed the first Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) for a couple who was at risk of having a child with a serious genetic disease. The technology allows couples at increased risk the opportunity to begin their pregnancy, and know on day one, that their baby will not have the genetic disease of concern. In this way, couples are able to build a healthy family without the risk (25-50%) of having a baby with severe disorders such as Thalassemia, Tay Sachs, Cystic Fibrosis, Congenital Myotonic Dystrophy, Fanconi Anemia, and Sickle Cell Disease.
